What is Finder Reminder?

Have you ever had one of those moments where you think “I’m just going to leave this here so I remember to get it later”, “Don’t worry, I’ll remember where that place is, I walked by it the other day”, or anything along the lines of: “This is perfect, I’ll easily remember where I’m leaving these passports/camping sets/spare car keys?”? Then hours, days, weeks or sometimes months later, you need to find that thing you were ‘totally going to remember!”, and you can’t for the life of you remember where it is!!?

Finder Reminder is a tool that quickly and easily solves those problems!

Finder Reminder works using proven principle of memory retention techniques including association and mnemonics . Remembering where something is becomes a breeze when you can link pictures, names, locations & descriptions.

Okay smart guy, so what does this App do?
The premise of Finder Reminder is to allow you to quickly store and retrieve applicable information which will help you remember anything you want. Quickly being the key word! Here are some examples:

Let’s say you want to remember a restaurant you’re walking by that you think looks good. Simply tap the Map Location button, and take a picture of the front of the restaurant. In seconds, you’ve now got a full image with quick access thumbnail image saved, the GPS location and mapping info stored. Next time you look at Finder Reminder, you’ll see a thumbnail of the restaurant and instantly remember that you wanted to go there.

So you’ve found the restaurant and you’re out with the gang. Someone at the table orders a great bottle of wine and you think, “This is a fantastic bottle, I wouldn’t mind one for home next week!”. One click and a couple keystrokes and you’ve got a picture of the bottle’s label, the name, and the year to show the nice man at the bottle shop! The great thing about Finder Reminder is that it’s not at all affected by the 8 bottles of that wine that your table managed to finish off when you were in the restaurant.

Perhaps you are filing some old gym receipts for taxes due in 4 months? You can create a new Thing, name it “Gym Receipts”, and take a quick picture of where you filed them. If you want to get really detailed, you can add a description saying how many there are, or what months there are for. If you are filing them at an offsite location, feel free to update the Map and get the GPS location of where they are!

Maybe your pal Will wants to borrow your favorite Sex and the City DVD collection. Months pass and you have a craving to see what Samantha and the girls are up to, but you can’t find your DVD’s. Seeing the thumbnail in Finder Reminder gets you all excited as you can see that it was almost 5 months ago you lent the discs to Will! Clicking the “Send Email Reminder” button quickly fires off a picture as well as all the details to Will letting him know that it’s time to say goodbye to the girls!

What if you’re out shopping for vinyl at a vintage record store, and you find a bunch of records you love, but the owner just won’t sell? Snap some pictures of the front covers, write down the title, year and record label from the back cover in the description field. All you need to do is click on the thumbnail cover in Finder Reminder to retrieve all the info! You can email the details to other record shops, or worse come to worse, buy digital versions when you get around to sitting in front of your computer next.

Say you’ve got a complex widget machine that has a bunch of dials and settings on the front. It’s operating perfectly! You decide to give yourself a bit of an insurance policy though… You take a picture of the front to get the position of all the dials and levers, name it “Widget Machine 100%!”, and quickly write down some other important details for its current state of operation. Weeks later when it starts behaving erratically, simply click the thumbnail image of it in Finder Reminder and see what all your settings were when it was operating perfectly!

Of course there are thousands of more ways you can use Finder Reminder, but these will give you some ideas that differ from the old keys & wallet standbys.

What is a “Thing” in Finder Reminder?

A “Thing” in Finder Reminder is what we call the main thing (see why we called it that!?) that you want to remember or be reminded of. Since it really can be anything you can think of, it was hard to think of a better word to use!

How do I create a new Thing?

From the main screen in Finder Reminder, simply click the + button in the top right hand of the screen.

How do I delete a Thing?

From the main screen in Finder Reminder, click the icon for your Thing. Finder Reminder will then load the details page for that Thing.

To delete the entire Thing (and picture if there is one):

  • Make sure the Details tab is selected on the bottom of the page.
  • Click the Trashcan icon in the top right of the screen.

Can I just delete the picture of a Thing?

Of course!  From the main screen in Finder Reminder, click the icon for your Thing. Finder Reminder will then load the details page for that Thing.

To delete just the picture for that Thing :

  1. Make sure the Picture tab is selected on the bottom of the page.
  2. Click the Trashcan icon in the top right of the screen.

Please note that you don’t have to delete a picture to take another one, you may overwrite a Thing’s picture at any time by taking another picture.

I don’t see a Location I want in the list of available Locations!

Don’t panic! There are a couple of things you can do in this situation:

  • Insert a new Location in the always available list of Locations:
    • Return to the Finder Reminder main screen
    • Click the “Settings” button in the top left
    • Click the “Manage Locations” button
    • Click the + button in the top right to add a new Location. This location is now available to all your Things!
  • Insert a once off custom Location for your Thing:
    • Click the area where the text of the Location would be (just to the right of the left hand title “Location”)
    • Edit the text directly without having to select from the pre-populated list of Locations. Cool!

Eeek! I inserted a Location by accident.

To delete a Location, you can either swipe right on the location to delete, or click the edit button in the lower right.

Oh no! I spelt the name of my new Location wrong!

To change the text of a location, simply click on it! You’ll be able to edit the text instantly.

How do I save a Map location of my Thing?

In the Thing detail page, simply click the radar/target icon in the lower left of the screen to update and save your current map location. (TIP: If there is no mapping data saved yet for your Thing, you can also click on the text “Not Stored” text to update your map location).

I’m nowhere near this place on the map! What the heck!?

Finder Reminder uses the built in location services provided by your devices operating system.  Since this provided service can occasionally be flakey, we’ve provided a few things to ease the pain.

In the Settings area (from the main page), there is a “Map Updates Until” setting you can change. What this allows you to do is let Finder Reminder know how accurate a result you would like before Finder Reminder turns off its location services.

There is a tradeoff of course with increased accuracy: the more accurate the result you want, the longer it usually takes.  If you have the setting on a high accuracy and you are in a place like a shopping centre, parking garage or underground prison, Finder Reminder may never reach your desired accuracy simply because of the adverse conditions. In this case, you may manually turn off the location service by clicking the radar/target button in the bottom left again or by leaving the Thing detail page.

Another thing that Finder Reminder provides is a realtime update of the current map accuracy, which is displayed in the “Map Location” area in the details page. If the accuracy number stays in the same position for a long time, the odds are good that the displayed current accuracy is the best you will get depending on your physical location.

How can I get directions from where I am to my Thing?

Finder Reminder provides a cool feature to help with this via the Map Location page.

Click the > to the right of the Map Location area in the Thing details page. This will open up the default map view with your Thing on it. Clicking the button which appears next to the name of your Thing will allow you to open the location in the Maps application where you can use all of Maps advanced features.

I want to remind myself / my friend of my Thing via email, can I do this!?

Of course you can, Finder Reminder allows a quick one touch way to send an email reminder with everything already typed in for you!

From the Thing detail page, simply click “Send Email Reminder” and watch the magic. Finder Reminder will generate an email for you which contains all of the relevant information to your Thing including it’s picture, date, name, description, location and even a clickable link to view it on Google maps!
